Frequently Asked Questions
Normandy D-Day Tours

At French Battlefields, I specialize in guided D-Day tours in Normandy, offering visitors an authentic and meaningful way to discover the history of June 6, 1944. Below are the most common questions travelers ask before booking their tour.

Booking & Planning

1. How far in advance should I book my tour?
I recommend booking as early as possible, especially for the busy months between April and October, and around the D-Day anniversary. Last-minute bookings are possible depending on availability.

2. How do I book a tour?
You can book directly through my website or by email. I will confirm your reservation and provide all necessary details about the meeting point and itinerary.

3. Do you require a deposit or full payment in advance?
I do not require a deposit. The payment is done the day of the tour.

4. What payment methods do you accept?
I accept major credit cards, bank transfers, and secure online payments.

5. What is your cancellation policy?

As I do not ask for a deposit, I would only ask you to notify me as soon as you know you have to cancel our tour.

Tour Logistics

6. Where do the tours start?
Most tours depart from Bayeux, or the immediate surroundings which are central to the Normandy landing beaches. The pickup is done directly at your accommodation.

Pickup in other places such as Caen, Carentan or other B&B in the countryside are possible with extra fee.

7. Is transportation included?
Yes. All tours include transportation in a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle (Dacia Jogger) with your guide.

I have a transportation license and insurance allowing me to drive and guide you safely and legally.

8. How long do your tours last?
My full-day tours usually last between 8 and 9 hours. It is possible to customize the timing if necessary. Multi-day itineraries can also be arranged.

9. Do you provide food or drinks during the tour?
Meals are not included, but I always schedule a break at a local café or restaurant. Bottled water is provided during the tour.

10. What should I wear and bring?
I recommend comfortable walking shoes, weather-appropriate clothing, and a light jacket. Normandy weather can change quickly, so it’s best to be prepared.

Tour Content & Experience

11. What Normandy D-Day tours do you offer?
I offer American, Canadian, British, and Airborne full-day tours, as well as custom private tours. Highlights include Utah Beach, Omaha Beach, Juno Beach, Sword Beach, Gold Beach, Pointe du Hoc, Pegasus Bridge, Sainte-Mère-Église, the Juno Beach Centre, and the main Commonwealth and American cemeteries. You can check the different guided tours of my DDay Tour page.

I also offer Battlefields Tours to the inland battles in Normandy, such as Saint-Lô and the Battle of the Hedgerows, Villers-Bocage, Operation Epsom and Goodwood, and the Falaise Pocket. You can check on my Battle of Normandy Tours page.

12. Which tour should I choose?

13. Are museum entrances included?

No — my tours do not usually include museums. My goal is to focus on the real battlefields, landing beaches, cemeteries, and memorials, where history actually happened. While museums can be interesting, I believe the most powerful and meaningful experience comes from standing on the ground where the events of D-Day truly unfolded. An exception is done for the Canadian DDay Tour (with a visit of the Juno Beach Center, not included in the price).

Museums can be added on request, or can be part of a Footsteps Tours if relevant to your relative's story (Airborne Museum, Utah Beach Museum, Juno Beach Center, Pegasus Bridge Museum, ...)

14. How much walking is involved?
Most tours involve moderate walking on beaches, cemeteries, and historical sites. The pace is comfortable and adapted to the group.

15. Can I customize a tour?
Yes ! I often create personalized itineraries focusing on a particular unit, battle, or relative’s involvement in D-Day. This is especially meaningful for families tracing their history. You can check on my Footsteps Tours page for more information.

Accessibility & Practical Info

16. Are your tours suitable for children?
Yes. Many families bring children, and I adapt the explanations to make the experience both educational and engaging.

17. Are your tours accessible for visitors with reduced mobility?
Many sites are accessible, but some (like Pointe du Hoc or Merville Battery) involve uneven terrain. Please let me know in advance, and I will adapt the route to your needs.

Unfortunately, my vehicle can not accommodate any type of wheelchair or electric scooter.

18. Are restrooms available during the tour?
Yes. I make regular stops where restrooms are available. Most DDay sites will have restrooms available.

19. Are pets allowed on the tours?
For comfort and safety, pets are not permitted on tours.

Guide Expertise

20. Who leads the tours?
Your tours are led by me, Romain Bréget, a certified battlefield guide and historian, with years of experience in guiding visitors across Normandy’s D-Day sites. You can learn more about me and my background on the About your guide page.

21. What language are the tours conducted in?
Tours are conducted in English. French tours may be available upon request.

22. Why should I choose French Battlefields over other tour companies ?
I provide expert knowledge, personalized guiding, and authentic historical insight, focusing not just on famous landmarks but also on lesser-known but crucial battlefields. My tours combine storytelling, historical accuracy, and time for reflection.

Honoring the Fallen

23. Do the tours include visits to cemeteries?
Yes. Each tour includes a visit to at least one cemetery: the Normandy American Cemetery (Colleville-sur-Mer), Bény-sur-Mer Canadian Cemetery, or Bayeux Commonwealth Cemetery, depending on the itinerary.

24. Can I request a special stop to honor a relative?
Absolutely. I can arrange visits to the exact grave or memorial of a soldier, and tailor the tour to honor their story. Check the Footsteps Tour page for more information.

25. Is there time for reflection and photographs?
Yes. I ensure that every stop includes time for photographs, personal reflection, and moments of commemoration.
